Lomography sure knows how to make a stylish camera. If you need more evidence of that, it’s readily available on the Kickstarter page for its new Lomo’Instant Automat instant film camera. It’s currently in Kickstarter mode, but it’s predictably far beyond its original fund raising goal. The camera itself looks very slick and comes in four different colorways, including yellow, red, or white on white. There’s also an all-black edition, of which I’m personally a fan. In terms of technical specs, the camera has automatic and bulb exposure modes, but it does allow for exposure compensation and some flash control if you want to tweak the exposures. It uses a zone focusing system to keep things simple, and shoots to the easily-available Fujifilm Instax Mini film packs. One interesting feature is the infrared remote built-into the lens cap so you can fire it without being near the camera. For a while there, we couldn’t go more than a week without some new action camera hitting the store shelves. The flow has slowed quite a bit in recent months, but Garmin recently updated its Virb action camera lineup, and the Ultra 30 actually has quite a few impressive new features. Perhaps one of the most important points is at the back of the camera, where Garmin has included a 1.75-inch touchscreen display, something the big boys at GoPro have yet to implement at the top of their line. Since the Virb Ultra 30 is made by Garmin, it’s obviously equipped with GPS, which uses the G-Metrix data in order to record extra information like elevation, speed, and acceleration. Another pretty awesome feature (at least on paper) is the voice control function, that allows users to perform basic functions (like starting and stopping recording) by simply talking at the camera. It’s an action camera, so it probably prefers yelling. In terms of video chops, it can do 4K at 30 fps, which utiادامه مطلب

SP 150–600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 (Model A022) As the SP in the name suggests, the new 150–600mm lens has been given a redesign to look like the other current SP lenses, with the new logo and exterior finish. Inside, the optics have been “refreshed” to include 21 elements in 13 groups with three elements being of the Low Dispersion variety. Tamron promises improved sharpness and “overall better performance” as a result of the new optical arrangement. In terms of coatings, Tamron has applied the eBAND coating, which promises higher light transmission and reduced reflections. The BBAR coating fights flare and ghosting, while the fluorine coating helps prevent grime build-up on the glass, which is important when you have such a massive front lens element. One of the biggest improvements comes in the form of the Vibration Compensation, which now promises 4.5 stops of assistance, up from 3 stops in the previous version. It also now has three different types of VC, including one ادامه مطلب

"It began while leaving an airport in Rapid City, South Dakota. Myself, along with a group of other photo enthusiasts we loaded onto a bus and headed to Wall, South Dakota. It was a quaint old town with a very interesting past and we spent two days there. After getting up before the birds and rattlesnakes, we all loaded onto the bus to capture sunrise pictures of the Badlands. It was truly amazing watching the sun begin its downward slide over the ragged mountains and we didn't miss a beat trying to capture the shadows, awakening colors and magnificence of the mountain range. We spent two days in the Badlands at several different outlooks and just continued our picture taking well into the sunset. With our two Nikon professionals, we leaed many important factors of our cameras and put that knowledge to good use during the whole trip. On day three, we headed to Mt. Rushmore to see this wonder of the world. Even before parking, we had great views of the four presidents fromادامه مطلب

If you haven’t gotten to try out a 360° action camera yet, you may find yourself boggled by the proliferation of forms and functions that the new cameras have. While no two are exactly alike, they share the ability to produce immersive, “spherical” videos, whose point of view can be changed later, allowing viewers to navigate around the video, using either their mouse cursor, smart device, or virtual reality headset. To get a handle on these devices for myself, I recently road-tested two popular models, the Ricoh Theta S and the 360Fly 4K, on my my moing bicycle commute. Using a third-party mount, I attached each camera to the same spot on my handlebars on two consecutive days with comparable lighting conditions. Afterwords, I unloaded the videos that each camera made using the manufacturer’s proprietary software. The quality of the videos shown are not fully representative of the maximum resolution attainable by each device. When uploading the footage to YouTube or DailyMotادامه مطلب

Sony has been on something of a 50mm lens kick lately. First, it introduced its version of the ‘nifty fifty” in the form of the affordable 50mm f/1.8. Then came the super-high-end Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA prime for pro shooters. Now, Sony has aounced a new FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro prime lens for full-frame cameras like the A7S Mark II. The new Macro lens is a true macro lens with a 1:1 reproduction ratio, which means it can focus to 6.3-inches, allowing for close-up photography with a looser composition. It has a focus-range limiter to help prevent the lens from hunting when you’re trying to get close to a subject, a problem that exists in many close-up shooting situations. It also has a focus hold button in case you’re focusing by adjusting the distance between camera and the subject. In terms of optics, the lens features an Extra-Low Dispersion element to help address chromatic aberration issues that pop up when focus gets extremely close. The lens will be available in Sepادامه مطلب

Yuneec makes some pretty excellent unmaed aerial photography machines (or drones, if you will), and today the company has aounced a compact quadcopter that puts the emphasis on ease of operation. It’s called the Yuneec Breeze and it’s meant to be controlled with a mobile device or just follow you around. The Breeze weighs just under a pound and is equipped with a built-in camera that shoots 4K UHD video as well as 13-megapixel still images. It’s meant to be easy to fly out of the box and it has five different modes of operation. Pilot mode is controlled by an iOS or Android smart device. Selfie mode makes it automatically take a selfie. Orbit mode tasks the drone with doing 360-degree loops around a single object. Jouey mode allows it to follow a plaed course. Finally, Follow Me mode uses GPS to track a moving object, which is the kind of thing you’re looking for if you’re into extreme sports. The app has a variety of built-in sharing options, so the footage andادامه مطلب

Facebook posted today that it will make its image identification software downloadable and available to the public. We've already seen the basics of image identification software come into play on Facebook when we upload a picture and get suggested tags based on recognized faces, but the new software released aims to take the capabilities beyond that. Facebook has released three main algorithms: DeepMask, SharpMask, and MultiPathNet. "We're making the code for DeepMask+SharpMask as well as MultiPathNet — along with our research papers and demos related to them — open and accessible to all, with the hope that they'll help rapidly advance the field of machine vision. As we continue improving these core technologies we'll continue publishing our latest results and updating the open source tools we make available to the community," writes Facebook research scientist Piotr Dollar. These tools aim to identify and label the contents of photographs, a function that will be useful in the ادامه مطلب

From here on out, it seems like a pretty safe assumption that just about every new camera (like the brand new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV) is going to have wireless coectivity baked right in. It’s an essential piece of many shooters’ workflow. Now, Canon has aounced a new wireless adapter called the W-E1 that’s shaped like an SD card and will add coectivity to cameras like the EOS 7D Mark II and the high-resolution EOS 5DS bodies. While it looks like a standard memory card, it’s important to note that there’s no actual storage on the card itself. It’s shaped like that simply so it can be plugged into the camera’s secondary memory card slot. That means you’ll have to give up your redundant card slot if you want to add wireless coectivity. It’s not an ideal solution, but it has its benefits over plugging in an exteal dongle or using a third party wireless card. Accoادامه مطلب

The big news out of the Canon camp today is, of course, the new EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR, but the company also has a pair of updates for its popular zoom lenses: The EF 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM and EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM. The 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM is, as the name suggests, the third iteration of the popular wide-angle zoom lens, which is a staple for many photojoualists and event shooters. The new optical design includes a dual-surface aspherical lens element, as well as a ground aspherical lens. There’s now a fluorine coating on the outer elements to improve its resistance to moisture and grime that tends to accumulate on the front element. Canon claims there will be considerable image quality improvements with the new version of the lens, particularly in the coers where things can get a bit soft on wide-angle zooms. The EF 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM will be available in Octobادامه مطلب

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III was an unquestionable success as a pro-grade DSLR. It even won our Camera of the Year award back in 2012. Now, we get to meet its successor in the form of the EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR and there’s a lot of new stuff to talk about. We even had a chance to get some hands-on time with a preproduction version of the camera. One of the biggest hardware upgrades comes in the form of the 30.4-megapixel, full-frame, CMOS sensor, which gains 8 megapixels over the EOS 5D Mark III that came before it. The sensor is coupled with the latest DIGIC 6+ Image Processor, which gives it a native ISO range of 100–32,000, expandable down to ISO 50 and up to ISO 102,400. So, there’s no sky-high jump in maximum ISO settings, but the native range has been bumped up from 25,600 in the EOS 5D Mark III. But, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t expect increased ISO performance over the prevادامه مطلب

The Fujifilm X-series cameras have been some of the most stylish around in recent years, and the entry-level X-A3 is certainly no exception. The new model brings a rather dapper new design, as well as the aouncement of the new Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR weather-resistant prime lens. The X-A3 is adoed with classy aluminum dials, as well as a new “faux leather” material that enhances the texture of the camera as you hold it in your hand. Undeeath the aesthetic overhaul, however, there are some tangible hardware upgrades. The 24.3-megapixel sensor is up from 16.3 megapixels in the X-A2 that came before it. In addition to to the bump in megapixels, there are also some new focusing features, including customizable focus peaking during HD video recording with manual focus. As with many other entry-level cameras, it’s heavy on the creative modes and filters, adding two new film emulaادامه مطلب
